Liberty began in Lisbon with a litigator who changed sides of the courtroom. Madalena Monteiro trained in litigation, took a master’s degree in it, and spent her early career in the aftermath of Portugal’s financial crisis. Down the hall sat the citizenship and immigration team. She kept moving her chair closer. Litigation, she found, was about people at their angriest. Immigration was about people at their most hopeful: families arriving with a plan for their lives and asking for help making it real.
She spent more than a decade making those plans real, guiding over a thousand investor families through Portugal’s Golden Visa and Europe’s residency programs. Clients came from the United States, China, Hong Kong, South Africa, Nigeria, India, Pakistan, Brazil and across the Middle East. Different countries, different stories, one thing in common: they wanted a future they could plan around, in a place where they felt safe.
She founded the firm on a simple conviction. Immigration is, at its heart, helping people make the plan they have for their lives real. The firm exists to make that plan solid.
The litigator never quite left. When Portugal’s authorities imposed a de facto ban on Russian and Belarusian applicants that was never written into law, the firm sued, more than 170 times, and won. When the government moved to rewrite citizenship rules for people already in the queue, the firm commissioned an 82 page constitutional opinion from Jorge Miranda, the professor who helped write Portugal’s Constitution, filed the Golden Visa investors’ amicus curiae brief at the Constitutional Court, and joined the consortium that took 1,260 residents’ complaints to the Ombudsman. Precision in the paperwork. A fight when the rules are broken. That is the practice.
Today the firm works from Lisbon, Milan and Beverly Hills, and its founder is one of the international press’s regular voices on European immigration law, cited by Investment Migration Insider, Citizenship.EU, The Portugal News and Nomad Gate.
The name is Liberty because that is the product. Everything else was extra words.
The name, in short. We removed every word we didn’t need. What remains is the reason people come to us. Liberty. The dot is the point.
